• History of the Islamic WorldWho should take this course?Students who are interested in global history, or the Islamic world, or just looking at history through another lens. Muslims and non-Muslims welcome!What will we be studying?Caliphates, sultanates, math, science, geography, trade, mysticism, reform, gender, and politics, from the time just before Islam through the present.Is this a religion course?This is a history course, about the Islamic World. We will discuss issues of religion, but this is not a theology course. No background in religion is expected, and no answers to religious quandries will be given.How is the course taught?An emphasis will be placed on class discussion. Our main textbook will be the very readable, almost novel-like Destiny Disrupted, supplemented by other readings, in class and for homework.Will homework be time-consuming?Homework will be graded on basic completion only, so time spent is flexible. It will mostly be reading and breif responses to start discussions.Will there be tests?One multiple choice test, one in-class essay, and two geography quizzes.Research papers?Two, with the topics up to you.Pre-requisites:9th and 10th grade global history.This is a two term course, students my take either semester or both semesters.
