Course Description
As seniors, you are preparing to leave Stuyvesant and become citizens of the world who will attend diverse institutions, study abroad, and vote. It will serve you well to have read not only global history, but first-hand global narratives: literature that provides compelling and authentic insight to cultures that are underrepresented in the traditional European and American canons. Global Perspectives will offer students fiction and nonfiction from Africa, Asia, and South America, and by African-Americans, Native Americans, and women. Each student brings his or her own set of unique experiences to a reading, which creates another layer of “global perspectives” within the classroom each day. Our discussions will help students both feel more at home in the world, seeing their own family’s experiences and values reflected, and expand their worldview by developing a better understanding of new cultures. Assignments will ask students to both analyze these texts and express personal growth as a reader and thinker. A culminating senior portfolio will be modeled after Azar Nafisi’s Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books. (Reading at Stuyvesant…)
